1st Lt. Montraville C. Bailey
Montraville Cyrus Bailey ("Montville"), 2nd great-granduncle of Companion Jeffry Burden, was born in Sangerville, Piscataquis County, Maine in 1828 to Cyrus Bailey and Anna Packard. He worked as a farmer, and married Mary E. Sprague in 1852.
He was appointed Postmaster of South Sangerville in 1861 before accepting a commission as 1st Lieutenant of Company "I", 22nd Maine Infantry (a nine-months unit) in October 1862. He served with the Regiment before resigning his commission in New Orleans in January 1863 and returning home.
Montraville was drafted, along with his brother Parley, into Company "H", 8th Maine Infantry in September 1864. He served in the Richmond theater, and participated in the pursuit of Lee's forces following the fall of Richmond. He mustered out with the Regiment in July 1865. After the War he resumed farming, and was awarded a pension in 1886. He died in Sangerville in 1910.
